Need Disability Benefits?
Looking To Apply For Disability Benefits?
I’m about to show you how you can get approved for any disability benefit you need (see bottom for more info). But first, let’s discuss what disability really is…
Think of disability and the picture that conjures up in our minds is that of wasted minds and bodies eliciting either sympathy or derision from fellow human beings.
To understand the subject better, the question that needs to be answered first is what does disability exactly mean? World Health Organization (WHO), in 1976 defined disability as any restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being.
Disability thus refers to a great number of different functional restrictions occurring in a population. According to current estimation, there are about 600 million people in the world who are disabled in one or the other way. Over two third of them belong to the developing countries. Out of this two third, a majority of them are in Sub Saharan Africa, South and South East Asia.
But this estimation has again to be understood within the limitation of the fact that different societies have different standards for measuring disability. For example, being a poor and homeless female is considered as a disability in several South East and Central Asian societies.
Causes of Disability:
Poverty:
According to the estimation of the World Bank 20 percent of the world’s poorest people are disabled. This means that there is a high co-relation between poverty and disability. This co-relation is a sort of vicious circle which most societies find difficult to break Poverty leads to inadequate shelter, unhygienic living conditions, lack of sanitation, lack of clean drinking water and poor access to health facilities which in turn aid disability. Likewise, disabled people, if not already poor are very vulnerable to poverty because disability often results in loss of income and increase in expenditure in the form of increased medical bill, purchase of special devices etc.
Malnutrition:
Malnutrition, although a byproduct of poverty, is in itself a major cause of disability. The common micronutrient deficiencies that cause disability are:
- Vitamin A deficiency causes blindness.
- Vitamin B deficiency causes many diseases like beri beri, pellagra and anaemia.
- Vitamin D deficiency causes to rickets.
- Iron deficiency causes anemia and is one of the main causes of maternal mortality.
- Calcium deficiency leads to osteoporosis.
Occupational Hazards:
Occupation related health problems are manifold. Pollution, poor working conditions, ignorance and disregard of safety norms etc can usher in disability. Stone quarrying, diamond cutting, leather works, deep sea diving, medical and engineering sectors all are replete with occupational hazards that can cause disability.
Wars:
This disability causative agent is self-explanatory. Many a soldier has become a victim of war.
Traffic Hazards:
Rapid growth in number of vehicles and disregard for traffic rules have resulted in road accidents that killed many and maimed more.
Every human being has a right to live a dignified life. It is heartening to note that the societies are slowly awakening to the needs of the disabled and are trying to incorporate laws to cater to their special needs.
